The Nature Restoration Law was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on July 29, 2024, and officially came into effect 20 days after publication, on Sunday, August 18.
We mark this historic moment with great excitement as the law sets legally binding targets for member states to restore 20% of land and 20% of marine areas by 2030, and all ecosystems requiring restoration by 2050.
This day follows years of advocacy and campaigning by the #RestoreNature movement to bring the Nature Restoration Law to fruition, allowing us all to work together on restoring our rivers, forests, wetlands, and urban greenery.
Each country is expected to develop a National Plan for the implementation of the new legislation, which will analyze the needs and urgency of restoring specific types of habitats and sites and define concrete measures. As we noted in response to H-Alter‘s query, we hope the Plan will be adopted within two years at the latest.
