Adriatic Flyway: Figthing poaching and observing bird migration

From 13th to 17th March 2017 BIOM employees participated  in two workshops held in Ulicnj, Montenegro, which were focused on raising capacities of ornithological NGOs concerning the fight against poaching and observing bird migration.

During the first workshop, the work of Committee Against Bird Slaughter – CABS was presented. The Committee has been active for more than 40 years in tackling poaching and crimes against birds, focusing mainly on black spots such as Cyprus and Malta. Through active disucussion and practical demonstration, the participants gained knowledge to tackle this threat in their own countries.

The second workshop focused on bird migration, due to the fact that birds are now returning to central and northern Europe from their wintering grounds in Africa. The participants had the opportunity to monitor bird migration on key areas, such as Ada Bojana and Ulcinj salt pans. During the workshop, more than a 1000 birds were recorded, mainly duck species. The importance of Ulcinj salt pans for bird migration is portrayed in the short documentary “Ugroženo blago Ulcinja” (with English subtitles).
